Ferries are the standard way to reach the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera) and the Canary Islands with a pet, since neither archipelago is reachable by land or rail. Baleària, one of the main operators on these routes, sets out several options rather than one fixed approach: Pet&You or Pet&You XL lets a pet travel on a mat beside your own seat, a Pet Friendly Seat keeps a smaller pet in its carrier on your lap or at your feet, and pet-friendly cabins let the pet stay with you in your own cabin, with a bed and water bowl provided.

For pets that aren't travelling in the cabin or on a seat, Baleària uses on-deck or garage-based 'Calm Houses' — protected, ventilated spaces with set visiting times and, on some vessels, video monitoring — rather than a traditional kennel. One detail that differs from a short Channel crossing: Baleària's own guidance says pets cannot stay inside the vehicle during the crossing, so plan for one of these dedicated options rather than assuming the car itself works as a pet space.

Whichever option you book, the dog must be on a lead during boarding and disembarking, and muzzled if it's a dangerous or unsociable animal — PPP dogs must also meet the applicable PPP rules covered elsewhere in this guide. Guide and assistance dogs travel free and don't need a separate pet accommodation booked. As availability and exact options vary by vessel, route and sailing, book the pet option at the same time as the ticket itself.
