Fressnapf is Germany's dominant pet-store chain and genuinely a homegrown brand: founded in Erkelenz in 1990, headquartered in Krefeld, with over 770 branches across Germany and more than 1,400 across a dozen European countries, according to its own company history. It stocks food, carriers, leads, grooming supplies and basic health products including over-the-counter tick prevention, and many branches also offer in-store grooming.
Das Futterhaus is a well-established second dedicated pet-store chain, found in many towns where it competes directly with Fressnapf, with a broadly similar range of food and supplies. Both chains are reliably easy to find by name in most mid-sized and larger German towns, making either a straightforward first stop for restocking while travelling.
Supermarkets (Edeka, Rewe, Kaufland and others) also stock a basic range of pet food and essentials, which is often the most convenient option for a short top-up rather than a dedicated shopping trip, though the range is naturally narrower than a specialist pet store.
